I just had a surreal conversation with a guy handing out pamphlets:

guy: Do you know Hitler endorsed Obama's healthplan?
me: Hitler?
guy: Yes, in 1939.
me: Really?  That's interesting.  Who're you working for?
guy: I'm just a concerned citizen.
me: You have pamphlets....
guy: I'm a volunteer.
me: Who for?
guy: The Mass. GOP.

The pamphlet was your basic FUD, no mention of Hitler.

Yeah. (0.00 / 0)
Do you have documentation of that occuring. Nice try buddy.

I'm supposed to carry a video camera? (6.00 / 1)
Sheesh.  As I said, the pamphlet didn't saying anything about Hitler.

Why are you surprised your guys on the street are saying the same things Rush is?

[ Parent ]
Nice try indeed. (6.00 / 1)
We all know they would NEVER resort to tactics like that.

[ Parent ]
did you read the transcript? (6.00 / 1)
The smears, distortions and historical inaccuracies in Rush's broadcast are revolting:

Now what are the similarities between the Democrat Party of today and the Nazi party in Germany?  Well, the Nazis were against big business.  They hated big business and, of course, we all know that they were opposed to Jewish capitalism.  They were insanely, irrationally against pollution.  They were for two years mandatory voluntary service to Germany.  They had a whole bunch of make-work projects to keep people working one of which was the Autobahn.

They were against cruelty and vivisection of animals but in the radical sense of devaluing human life, they banned smoking.  They were totally against that.  They were for abortion and euthanasia of the undesirables as we all know and they were for cradle-to-grave nationalized health care.

I have always bristled when I hear people claim that conservatism gets close to Naziism.  It is liberalism that's the closest you can get to Naziism and socialism.  It's all bundled up under the socialist banner.  There are far more similarities between Nancy Pelosi and Adolf Hitler than between these people showing up at town halls to protest a Hitler-like policy that's being heralded by a Hitler-like logo.

Remind me again (6.00 / 3)
What was the title of Jonah Goldberg's latest book?

[ Parent ]
GOP = Godwin's Own Party? (0.00 / 0)
This Hitler/Holocaust bullshit is a bit over the top, but I have to hand it to them--they know how to stomp on the drama accelerator.

What happens when you've played your Hitler card--and it doesn't work?  What do you play then?

You start cracking heads and breaking windows (6.00 / 1)
I think these thugs will keep ratcheting up the violence and thuggery until the rest of us are forced to stop them. It's the same game Osama Bin Laden played against the US, starting with the U.S.S. Cole, and then ratcheting up the action until a response is provoked.

That's why the entire "bipartisan" thing is so naive, pointless, and fruitless. Screw them. Marginalize them. When they bust heads and break windows, put them in jail for busting heads and breaking windows. Look at how the Episcopal Church bent over backwards trying to "avoid schism" with a similar crowd about gay/lesbian ordination and (their real target) the ordination of women. The national church spent years trying to accommodate them, and got nothing but spit in the face and fingers in the eye. A better response would have been to say "goodbye and good luck" -- and "good riddance" -- when the fracas started. Same with these rightwing morons.

Enough is enough.

"If the Republicans will stop lying about the Democrats, the Democrats will stop telling the truth about the Republicans" -- Adlai Stevenson

When they bust heads and break windows, put them in jail for busting heads and breaking windows (0.00 / 0)
Fair enough.

And until it happens - stop acting as if it did.

It wasn't Republicans with guns outside polling places last November.

Yr. Obedient Servant, Peter Porcupine, Republican

[ Parent ]
Excuse me? (0.00 / 0)
I don't recall ANYONE guarding polling places with guns (aside from local cops who happen to be armed, but I get the sense that's not what you're talking about).  I feel fortunate to live in a country that does not require that.

[ Parent ]
they were batons (0.00 / 0)
but its still voter intimidation.

[ Parent ]
I still don't know to what you refer. (6.00 / 1)

[ Parent ]
the new black panther party members (0.00 / 0)
who stood outside a philidelphia polling place in their uniforms carrying batons.  And I don't mean stood on the street with all the signs.  They were mere feet from the door.

The bush administration brought charges of voter intimidation up on them and then the obama administration dropped them.

[ Parent ]
Democrats are now Black Panthers? (0.00 / 0)
Cool!

[ Parent ]
I said the same thing (0.00 / 0)
when I found out I got to be an honorary member of the KKK.

[ Parent ]
ah yes, rabid response (0.00 / 0)
Kinda silly, don't you think?

The purpose of rabid response is to scorch the earth, to raise the stakes, to go nuclear in the hope that your opponent will be so shellshocked he can make no response at all. The purpose of rabid response is to grab the public by the throat and not let go.

Still, you need to separate folks response to your various defenses of bigotry from blaming one group for the actions of another.

[ Parent ]
hardly a rabid response (0.00 / 0)
just pointing out that if we're going to do such things as lump the KKK in with the Republican party then we might as well lump the black panthers in with the democrats.

I'm not trying to shell shock you into not responding.  I would genuinely like to hear why you think the obama administration was correct in dropping the voter intimidation charges.

[ Parent ]
No, I meant the KK conflation is a rabid response (0.00 / 0)
Just like the Black Panthers

I have no details on the charges, so no opinion

[ Parent ]
Really? Provide a link, SVP. n/t (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
It already has happened on your side. (6.00 / 1)
The Pittsburgh cop shooter was a right-wing lunatic egged on by the likes of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. The guy that shot up the Holocaust museum was also a right-wing lunatic. And Dr. Tiller's killer, needless to say, was also a right-wing lunatic.

Remember the Unitarian church shooter? He stated that he wanted to kill as many liberals as he could. And his language couldn't get any more Nazi-like or eliminationist:

"I thought I'd do something good for this Country Kill Democrats til the cops kill me....Liberals are a pest like termites. Millions of them Each little bite contributes to the downfall of this great nation. The only way we can rid ourselves of this evil is to kill them in the streets. Kill them where they gather. I'd like to encourage other like minded people to do what I've done. If life aint worth living anymore don't just kill yourself. do something for your Country before you go. Go Kill Liberals."

"None of us has gotten where we are solely by pulling ourselves up from our own bootstraps. We got here because somebody bent down and helped us." ~Thurgood Marshall

Who had guns outside polling places, PP? (6.00 / 1)
Let's see a link to this nonsense - put up or shut up, please...

Because by that time, it's too late (0.00 / 0)
So what you're saying is, although we can match significant numbers of current events and characteristics of the current political climate to events and characteristics of every single fascist movement of the last century or two, we should refuse to recognize the trajectory until fascism has progressed through the first few stages and is fully entrenched here, at which point, according to scholars of fascist history (serious scholars like Robert Paxton; Jonah Goldberg not included), it will be too late to reverse.

How convenient for you.

Eschewing obfuscation since 1955.

A rose by any other name is still a rose by another name.

It's LaRouche-ites (0.00 / 0)
Some Lyndon LaRouche types are using a picture of Obama with a Hitler moustache. I think it's those guys (they do seem to be all guys) who are infiltrating the rallies, not regular GOP.

my guy didn't have pictures (0.00 / 0)
Just standard issue "Obamacare is going to destroy civilization" GOP literature.

As I noted above, the GOP is big into the "Democrats are Nazis" meme as well.
