Job Posting: Blue Mass Group Director of Development

by: Bob Neer

Tue Oct 13, 2009 at 01:22:26 AM EDT

Calling all non-profit development experts: work with the most widely read independent political blog in New England.

If you're interested in the intersection of blogging, politics and journalism we've got a job for you. We're looking for someone to help us raise money to build BMG and integrate original reporting and an improved technology platform with the robust debate for which our esteemed commentariat has become famous.

Your job will be to research potential funding supporters, from foundations to individuals, and help prepare and present applications for support. This is a part-time position (perfect for addition to an existing portfolio of clients for anyone already in the development world) that can be done from anywhere with an Internet connection and a telephone. If interested, please email an introductory cover letter and resume to blue@bluemassgroup.com.

Question (0.00 / 0)
How does a for-profit LLC, BMG Media Empire, qualify for foundation support?

Answer (6.00 / 1)
You never know until you ask.  There are over 11,000 foundations in Massachusetts alone.  Not all fund only "nonprofits", either.  There are also other funding sources.  I had done this sort of thing for various arts organizations but do not have time and energy for this at present.

It's "for-profit" now, is it? (0.00 / 0)
And I thought all along you fellas were some kind of altruists.
How long before candidates for office start sending you checks, Pharma guys mailing you gallons of free skin cream, contractors kicking over tickets to the Kentucky derby, and so forth? Although I suppose all that could have been happening already, but one sure wouldn't know it from the critical tone adopted here toward pretty much everybody.

Seriously, though, is BMG now subject to any additional disclosure rules or ethical guidelines that we should all know about? Have you done a post on how much money you guys are taking in, how it's being spent, etc?

Technically, (0.00 / 0)
BMG Media Empire LLC is a for-profit limited liability company organized under the laws of MA.  However, the "for profit" thing is a legal distinction, not a real world one -- the notion of making much of a "profit" from the operation of BMG remains a laughable one.  We took in a little over $5,000 last year, almost entirely from selling advertising (we will probably make a good deal less this year since it's not a national election year).  We spent virtually all of that money on BMG-related expenses, most notably, getting ourselves out to Denver for the convention.  No Kentucky Derby tix yet.

If we divide the amount of money that BMG earns by the many hundreds of hours that the three of us spend on this site each year, it would not remotely approach the minimum wage.  Don't worry -- we're not getting rich doing this.

I'm open to the job but wonder if I could resist a little subterfuge :) (6.00 / 1)

Who are you going after? The Globe? Channel 5? The New York Times?

Don't think small, Jim. ;-) (6.00 / 1)

Does This Mean You'll have Enough Money to.... (6.00 / 1)
pay me?

I mean, I gut bills to pay too.

Dude, if you have $1,700 for a toilet (0.00 / 0)
You're hardly holding your breath for a BMG check to cover a few cold ones at The Tam.

Sorry Bob (0.00 / 0)
I don't get the $1,700. reference. Is that from one of them damn rock and roll songs you kids listen too?

That's how much Ernie Boch, Jr. (0.00 / 0)
Paid for his toilet. He actually bought three of them, according to Boston Magazine.

Weak attempt at humor. My apologies to the group.

As to  few cold ones at the Tam, please just mail your receipts to us.

Can BMG raise $$ to hire Ernie to do this? (0.00 / 0)

Number 1 requires work and always someone trying to take you out.

Besides you can still get primo dinner reservations by being number 2.

Oh wait. I burned my Half-Man Regan bridge. I'll never eat at another restaurant in this town again.
