Teabagging, Health Reform and "Indivisible"

by: johnk

Thu Nov 05, 2009 at 15:52:24 PM EST

(Really hilarious.  Watch the video.  Apparently it's more important to Rep. Akin that America be "under God" than that it be "indivisible."  Somehow, that doesn't surprise me. - promoted by David)

Lots of activity today with health care reform.  Major endorsements by the AARP and AMA for the health care reform bill.  The AARP endorsement should help in alleviating fears of seniors based on the misinformation being pushed by Republicans.  Plus word that the CBO's initial scoring of the GOP health plan was not so good.  Worse at reducing the deficit, doesn't cover additional people, does not lower premiums and doesn't protect those with pre-existing conditions.  Sounds like a winner.

But that's not all that went on today, a Tea Party event on Capitol Hill!  All the normal signs, etc. at the event.  One interesting note, Rep. Todd Akin (R-Doofus) lead fellow teabaggers in the Pledge of Allegiance.

johnk :: Teabagging, Health Reform and "Indivisible"

Akin says that it drives the liberals crazy.

And so as we now renew our commitment to the Red, White and Blue, let us with boldness proclaim the fact that we are one nation under God," said Akin. "It is altogether fitting that we should do this -- and it drives the liberals crazy."

The crowd laughed, and joined Akin in the Pledge

Oh, ha ha ha.  Those teabaggers are so nutty (pun intended). The problem?  Akin then goes on to screw up the Pledge of Allegiance.  He forgot to say "indivisible" before "with liberty, and justice for all."  The omission made Akin out of sync with the crowd.  It's fairly obvious at the end of the clip.

I guess the very fact that you are whipped up into a lather indicates that Akin & Co succeeded (3.00 / 5)
AARP---What-----this is a joke right? AARP is a snake oil company that seperates the elderly from their money re
flimsy insurance policies. Bunch of frigg'n con men. Middle aged morons in the American public live to be elderly morons.

The instant H1N1 fiasco was whipped up by BO and his minions specifically CDC/NIH and DHS. "Run for your lives to your nearest H1N1 Immunization Site before all is lost"! And then what happened? Like Medicare, Medicaid, AMTRAK, FAA, ICE, VA and anything else the federal government controls---they screw it up. Anyone that puts their faith in these dolts deserves everything they get in return.

For laughs now---I don't bother watching Saturday Night Live. It's a lot more humorous getting it live from the president or Gibbs.

I'm anxiously awaiting the pronouncement of reinforcements in Afghanistan (or not) Of course why bother going to Afghanistan when you can go to Ft Hood and get taken out there. Saves on gas on the return trip from south west Asia. This current presidency has a very dark cloud hanging over it.

Hmmm (5.00 / 1)
When our resident conservative sounds like lasthorseman, one can tell how much the conservative movement has...changed...since 2008.

Believe it or not, I have even more to say...

I find it depressing that MCRD qualifies as our resident conservative (5.00 / 1)
Have billxi and JohnD so lowered the bar that MCRD is now respectable?  What happened to gary or CMD or even JoeTS?

Resident crank, sure.

Maybe after dinner I'll watch the teabagger video--for now MCRD is all I can take (0.00 / 0)
Just got off a very constructive national conf. call  on how health reform will affect seniors with HHS Sec Sebalius and two staff from the White House Office on Health Reform and the office of Civic Engagement working on health reform (call arranged thru Families USA--thanks!).

On the 45 min. call, in addition to the expected "rah-rah" stuff from Sebalius and WH Staff, there was lots of solid info about the national reform House Bill 3962 and excellent questions from folks, seniors and non-seniors (like me, a nurse who works with seniors) who were on the call. Mike Hash did an impressive job of almost always answering each question head on with specifics--you can watch MIke's video message on health reform "Reality Check" (myth-busting) at the link below.

I'd almost forgotten about the WH website resources on health reform. These were recommended on the call--they look good so I'll offer a link here http://www.whitehouse.gov/real... I encourage BMG readers who are more interested in reality than in teabagger-dramatic-fantasy and to check it out. YOu could share your reactions in a comment here...

The irony of "indivisible" (0.00 / 0)
According to the blockquote above he also says, "It is altogether fitting that we should do this" which is almost verbatim a line from the Gettysburg Address delivered, of course, by a President pursuing a war to preserve the Union!

There was also a sit-in of protesters on the left in Liebermann's office (0.00 / 0)
Protesting his threatened filibuster and accusing him of being the Senator for Aetna not Connecticut.  There was sympathetic coverage from NECN.  Maybe someone can post a link.

"Perseverance is a great element of success. If you knock long enough and loud enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody." -Longfellow

I;ve read the fine print of the Health Care Bills from a selfish eye (0.00 / 0)
and this is from Thompson/RIA who actually tracks the fine print (I'm an actuary, we actually look at the language and calculate).

Anyone here contribute to Flexible Spending Account at work for medical expense reimbursement?  I don't care what your income level is, if you have kids and visit the dentist, if you have medical issues and lots of copays and are currently setting aside more than $2,500 to a Flex Account, you are going to be rudely surprised when/if this Health Care Reform Bill passes.  And BTW, the 7.5% threshold medical expense threshold will be moved to 10%.  Didn't think that the rhetoric in DC about this bill laid out the actual financial impact of this mess.

Our small company also got our quotes for 2010 from BCBS for next year.  Family coverage (which was just a little under $18k) will be increasing 21% for 2010.  Guess we're a "Cadillac" plan now.  Glad to know that the MA experiment is working out so well in real life.

Us Blue State residents better be prepared to get killed by all of this health care reform.  Numbers don't lie (but maybe the proponents of HCR do).

I did check out the myth-busting website (0.00 / 0)
that AnnEM points to up-thread.  I did not see any  explanation as to why the tax increases in this plan are not indexed to inflation.

Health care reform is going to be funded in part by higher income tax rates for individuals making more than $500,000 per year.  We can agree or disagree with whether or not this is a good thing; however we can all agree that $500,000 today is NOT the same as $500,000 40 years from now.  Just ask my parents who bought a lovely home in a nice Massachusetts town 40 years ago for $6,000!

Similarly, health care reform advocates are eager to point out that really small businesses (with payrolls less than $500,000) will not be hurt by the "pay or play" penalty.  However, this limit is also not indexed to inflation.  Every year smaller and smaller businesses will be hurt by this provision.

Has anyone heard or read any defense for not indexing these tax increases to inflation?

please read my comment above; if you think $500k is the bar you are off by a factor of 10 the wrong way.  If you are a basic worker drone in the commonwealth, you will be unpleasantly surprised as to your financial hit.

Bring it on BMG posters.  And bring your calculators/scenarios.

Thanks, Rep. Akin, for also pointing out that the "under God" language was added during the McCarthy Red Scare of the early fifties.  Ah, those were the days.

Maybe they didn't all get to the end of the pledge together because there are varying theological interpretations, just like the Lord's Prayer ("forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us" vs. "debts/debtors" vs. "trespasses", etc.).  Come to think of it, they don't really have any interest in an "indivisible" nation, do they?

Eschewing obfuscation since 1955.
