(Excellent work GGW. We'll winnow this down each week based on scores reported in the comments with the final, of course, in April. Tweet! Jump ball! - promoted by Bob Neer)

March Madness is again upon us.  Let's name the BMG Sweet 16!

Apologies in advance for misclassifications, errors, and omissions.  Off top of my head.

Criteria: Quality 70%, Quantity 30% (else we wouldn't have much to read).

no high school bracket? (0.00 / 0)
:)

Patrick/Murray/O'Day '10

Huh (6.00 / 2)
I put LynPB and BitB in the couch fight bracket.

And you may as well have an "Editor's Bracket" with David, Charley, Bob, and (let's face it, as he's pretty much given the privileges of one) Ernie.

~~~~
Believe it or not, I have even more to say...
also, I'm pretty sure... (6.00 / 1)
...billxi is over 40.  That may still qualify him as a "young" Republican.
I'd vote for CentralMassDad for token centrist over Edgar.  ETA would make a fine entry in the "lovable curmudgeons" bracket, though.  Not sure "Mike From Norwell" is a centrist, either.  Perhaps Pogo?
Other brackets: Cambridge, Cape, and "flatout loony" (I think LastHorseMan is  a shoe in, though).
Oh, and most posts per day...
For me the issue is: is he personally attacking other BMGers. I don't think he is, here. He's just using the word "fag" in a way that is insulting to a whole group of people under the rubric of "discussing it." -- Bob Neer
I miss CMD (6.00 / 1)
He was the archetypical "moderate" voter that both parties lust after.
funny (5.50 / 2)
i thought the same thing.  i wanted to give CMD the nod.  he's gold, jerry.  gold.  but in exile for so long.  just back recently.  does he still have the stamina to comment frequently?  maybe he's KG, good for first 10 minutes of game, but then the knee kicks in.  c'mon CMD.  leave it on the floor.
LastHorseMan (6.00 / 1)
should be somewhere in this mix, for all his creative efforts.
At least an honorary exhibition match?
Here we go (6.00 / 11)
KBusch over Sab.
Stomv over BrooklineTom.
AmberPaw over Judy.
Lynne over Mr. Lynne.
Ryan over Petr.
PP over JohnD.
Me over Bill (bill's young?)
Edgar over Mike.
KBusch and stomv is a tough match.  Stomv goes after KBusch with a barrage of science, math and green technology but KBusch defends with a shield of philosopher-king rhetoric and overloads stomv's soybean-powered math robot.  In a last ditch effort, stomv tell KBusch that Immanuel Kant was right!  KBusch, temporarily stunned, takes one to the dome.  Not to be outdone, yells back "global warming is A LIE!"  Stomv, suddenly angered, turns into a giant green creature, cross between the hulk and the green giant.  Seeing an oppurtunity (and aware of stomv's secret alter-ego, the Green Monster) he pulls out a bottle of round-up and sprays it at stomv.  KBusch to the final four.
All Amberpaw had to do was tell Lynne some stories of the people she works with an Lynne breaks down and cries.  Then Amberpaw steals Lynne's wallet just for good measure.  Amberpaw to the final four.
Ryan and PP have a battle using their respective methods of art.  Ryan belts out a surly ballad about social responsibility and government. He sings, he croons, he lullabies.  At the end of his performance, instead of confetti and balloons falling into the auditorium, newspaper pages fall.  The crowd is engulfed by editorials.  Ryan attempts to sing his way out but can't stop the crowd from reading.  In a desperate attempt to secure victory, Ryan tosses a match into the audience, causing a gigantic fire.  All of the newspapers are destroyed, but the smoke damages his voice.  Ryan barely makes it to the final four.
Flash to a smoke-filled room.  Edgar is sitting at a table in the back, surrounded by beautiful women.  The place goes quiet as a man enters.  It's too dark to see the man's face, and he makes no noise but the click as the metal heel of his boots hit the floor.  He walks slowly to the back.  "Edgar, I have finally found you" he rasps.  "For 7 years I've followed your trail.  It wasn't easy, having nothing to trace but half-smoked chewed up Cuban cigars and beaten Turkish men who feared to speak of the Armenian who fought back.  Well, the jig is up."  And just like that, the elusive kingpin of the Armenian mob was dead.  JoeTS to the final four.
Brilliant (6.00 / 3)
The idea of Amber stealing somebody's wallet is a hilarious image right there.  Bonus points for the Usual Suspects reference.
I laugh every time I read it.
I must disqualify myself... (0.00 / 0)
I am but an apprentice to stomv, he is the master. Plus he's my friend; one reason I like him is that he's right so many times more often than he's wrong (I'm not sure I've ever seen him be outright "wrong"). I truly enjoy excellence and he exemplifies it.
Meanwhile, I must disqualify myself. I am, in fact, in the middle of moving from Brookline to Somerville. After more then ten years in the same lovely (rented) home, my wife and must downsize. Brookline has been a marvelous home; we are eager to plant our roots in Somerville. Our new home is near Tufts, between Davis and Porter Square. I'm happy to trade up from the C and D to the Red Line. Goodbye, Barney Frank — hello, Mike Capuano.
I'm going to keep the "BrooklineTom" moniker for awhile, though.
Boy (0.00 / 0)
just finish 16 straight weeks of 5th grade travel basketball (3 practices a week, then every Saturday night @ Shea Gym in the old Weymouth Naval Air Station - my wife was overjoyed when she found out about that little game detail) and now another tournament?  Better rest up.
Guess I am a centrist so in the right bracket.
I'm always up for a little game of Find An Appropriate Orifice For the Yellow Ribbon.
[ Parent ]
umm (6.00 / 1)
I'm guessing that's an insult, probably based on some bizarre interpolation of this:
But they certainly are opposed to normalizing homosexuality, and - here's the thing I plead to be understood - if they could be assured that government was not synonymous with the elite (gay) agenda, they'd support government again.
It is funny how many people use that particular metaphor without knowing where it comes from.  This may help:
The word albatross is sometimes used to mean an encumbrance, or a wearisome burden. It is an allusion to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1798).
In the poem, an albatross starts to follow a ship - being followed by an albatross was generally considered an omen of good luck. However, the titular mariner shoots the albatross with a crossbow, which is regarded as an act that will curse the ship (which indeed suffers terrible mishaps). To punish him, his companions induce him to wear the dead albatross around his neck indefinitely (until they all die from the curse, as it happens). Thus the albatross can be both an omen of good or bad luck, as well as a metaphor for a burden to be carried (as penance).
I prefer to think of lightiris and myself as bringing good luck...
For me the issue is: is he personally attacking other BMGers. I don't think he is, here. He's just using the word "fag" in a way that is insulting to a whole group of people under the rubric of "discussing it." -- Bob Neer
I hate to say this (6.00 / 1)
But I never win the couch fight. He always gets the couch, by virtue of his 3-hour-commute-a-day, so therefore, I always defer the comfy spot to the Mr. since he sacrifices a lot to keep a roof over our heads.
;)
Also, he kicks my ass in logic.
Left in Lowell: cuz why read the Lowell Sun if you don't have to? ;)
