Former police officer and former deputy sheriff Charlie Lincoln gets one of the, if not the, largest pension in state history after former Senate president and former UMass Chairman Bill Bulger. Lieutenant Lincoln served 27 years as a full time Brockton cop. Charlie “double dipped” in his last 3 years in Brockton by also working as a full time deputy sheriff under former Plymouth County Sheriff Joe McDonough at the same time as his Brockton police job. As a result, Lincoln, of Middleborough, receives a full “double dip” pension for both jobs totaling $140,000 per year from state taxpayers.
Joe McDonough has also been a longtime member of the county retirement board. McDonough lost his Sheriff’s seat after one term to current Sheriff Joe McDonald in the 2004 election in large part due to this infamous “Charlie Lincoln pension scandal.”
Plymouth County pensions are processed for approval through the three County Commissioners. Charlie Lincoln’s pension was approved 2-1 by the commissioners including Commissioner Tim McMullen, of Pembroke, who has been Commissioner for 8 years and is seeking re-election this Nov. 2. In previous re-election campaigns, Tim McMullen has falsely denied approving Lincoln’s historic pension. However, in a debate with his current opponent broadcast last week on the Brockton WBET radio station, Tim McMullen finally admitted that he did in fact approve the amazing $140,000 Lincoln pension. Incumbent McMullen’s opponent this year is Sandra Wright of Bridgewater. McMullen is a democrat and Wright is a republican.
Charlie Lincoln is a frequent guest on the “Adam Bond Show” on Brockton radio on Thursdays. Bond is a former Middleborough selectman. Apparently, Sandra Wright and Charlie were guests on a show last week and she had a strong argument with Charlie about his pension. She told him that the scheme between Lincoln, McDonough and McMullen for Lincoln’s incredible $140,000 was morally wrong. Charlie denied any wrongdoing.
On Adam Bond’s Show on Brockton radio today, Charlie Lincoln endorsed Commissioner Tim McMullen for re-election on Nov. 2. Longtime politicians like McMullen usually welcome endorsements from well known people or groups. There has been no news yet about Commissioner McMullen’s response to Charlie Lincoln’s endorsement.
