Kos endorses Romney for President -- in Michigan

by: David

Thu Jan 10, 2008 at 18:23:00 PM EST

This is pretty funny.

Next Tuesday, January 15th, Michigan will hold its primary. Michigan Democrats should vote for Mitt Romney, because if Mitt wins, Democrats win. How so?

For Michigan Democrats, the Democratic primary is meaningless since the DNC stripped the state of all its delegates (at least temporarily) for violating party rules. Hillary Clinton is alone on the ballot.

But on the GOP side, this primary will be fiercely contested. John McCain is currently enjoying the afterglow of media love since his New Hamsphire victory, while Iowa winner Mike Huckabee is poised to do well in South Carolina.

Meanwhile, poor Mitt Romney, who's suffered back-to-back losses in the last week, desperately needs to win Michigan in order to keep his campaign afloat.  Bottom line, if Romney loses Michigan, he's out. If he wins, he stays in.

And we want Romney in, because the more Republican candidates we have fighting it out, trashing each other with negative ads and spending tons of money, the better it is for us. We want Mitt to stay in the race, and to do that, we need him to win in Michigan....

Now here's the thing -- without a real Democratic contest on the ballot, and a lack of party registration in Michigan, this is an open primary. Anyone can pick up a Republican ballot. So Michigan Democrats and independents who want to see the Republican battle royale continue should just take a few minutes on Tuesday, January 15th to cast a ballot for Mitt Romney in the Republican primary....

So why are we doing this? Because we can. Because it'll be fun. And because we've suffered Republican meddling, stealing, and disenfranchisement in our elections for far too long.

There's also an entertaining new graphic up:

Interesting idea.  Not sure whether I think it's a good one, though.  A bunch of the comments to kos's post protest that it's morally "wrong" to do this.  I disagree with that -- people vote strategically all the time, including Mitt himself, if you believe his story, which would make doing this kind of a poetic justice.  But I'm just not sure it's good strategy.  Romney is, indeed, a tragically lame figure right now.  Maybe it's best to keep him that way.

But would you expect anything else from the Kitchen Sink guy?

I definitely think McCain can beat our nominee...the only R that can, and Romney can really gum up his chance.

Yes, I may have a nightmare tonight about President Romney in 2009, but I think the smart money is on slowing down McCain and throwing the Republicans into chaos (err, of course the smart money was on Obama on Tuesday).

I suppose ... (0.00 / 0)
It would be a lot harder to sell that idea here in Mass than in Michigan...
I was kind of hoping that Mitt would drop out soon, so we can see if any of his supporters drift over to join the Ron Paul Revolution ...
Sounds unlikely, but its hard to figure what, if anything, that his supporters honestly believe in so ... maybe. :)

Besides, if the profesional anal-ists can get paid for openly discussing on the Tv about what they think is the likely defection of Ron Paul supporters to .... John McCain (are they mad?) should Ron drop out ... then I can speculate on welcoming the Romney hacks to the revolution ..
I dont even need to get paid to make such a brilliant prediction ,,,lol

1.  No party registration in Michigan --- Dems in MA can't vote in the GOP primary; in Michigan anyone can vote in either.
2.  The Michigan Democratic delegation gets no delegates as punishment for moving their primary up, so there's no "winning" in winning the Democratic primary.  Of course this is not the case in MA -- Dems' votes will help their preferred candidate.
3.  Few Dems are even on the ballot in Michigan -- BHO and JE aren't, for example.  HRC is.

So, Michigan is uniquely qualified in this case.

Could it be enough? (0.00 / 0)
And besides... since it all comes down to delegates, isn't there an argument for Floridians to do the same?

In any case, there could be a time frame when the Dems have sorted HRC, BHO, and JE... but the GOP is still figuring it out.  If that happens, the Dem nominee-to-be will fall completely off the radar for a while.  Sure the GOP will be spending money, but they'll also have lots of on-air time and that could translate to more message, more volunteers, and more donations.

Could be.  Maybe no.

Romney (0.00 / 0)
I know what you're saying, David, about keeping Romney a tragically lame figure, and I certainly wouldn't be sad to see him go.

But I'm rooting for him in Michigan, sort of in the same (and rare) way one might have briefly rooted for the Yankees a few years back when they were playing one of our chief wild-card competitors near the end of the season. McCain is the Republican's best shot, so it wouldn't be a bad thing to see his momentum blunted.

I have real visceral distaste for Mitt Romney, but then again I'd love to be able to keep kickin' him around for the next couple of months.

I just heard from my Mom in Ann Arbor (0.00 / 0)
She says that Hillary is NOT unopposed on the Dem ballot.  Kucinich is on the ballot.  He may not be a major contender, but (apparently) it's not accurate to say that Hillary gets a free pass.

My mom has already voted absentee, but she got a call today from what sounds like a Dem push poll of some kind:

I received a recorded telephone "survey" wanting to know if I supported Bush (NO), if I intended to vote for a Republican (NO). Then the voice explained that the democratic ballot offered no choices. It began to explain why I might want to cross over and vote for a Republican. But by then I felt somewhat befouled and hung up. Now I wish I had heard him out, just to know what is going on.

Michigan has always had this cross-over primary (you can vote in the ballot for either party, regardless of your party affiliation).  We had wondered whether it affected some results - there was one year that the Gov nominee was a bit of a surprise (I can't recall for sure - was it when Headlee got the nod?  Tisch?).

I am hesitant to press my Wolverine family and friends on this.  I care about the institutions of this Republic more than I care about any of the individual candidates, frankly.  Respecting the vote means voting responsibly and for the right reasons.

I will note, though, my late father was a huge supporter of Gov. George Romney.  Maybe we could justify support for Mitt in this primary as a sort of memorial tribute. . . .

Oh, NO! PLEASE! That would be WRONG! (0.00 / 0)
No!  No!   Don't vote for Romney in Michigan!

She's purposely telling us what to do, knowing that we'll do the opposite, in which case we should do exactly as she says.  Unless she's accounted for that, in which case we should do the opposite.  AAAAGH! TRIANGULATION LOCKUP!

Eschewing obfuscation since 1955.

Republican delegates are like fertilizer...they help the health of America best when spread widely and thin on the ground.

Believe it or not, I have even more to say...

bad idea (6.00 / 1)
If you live in Michigan and support Barack Obama or John Edwards (or Richardson or Biden or Gore or any one else not on the ballot...), you should vote for Uncommitted. That way in the probable case that Michigan's delegation is admitted to the convention, those delegates will be free to vote for any candidate, instead of the overwhelming bulk of the delegates being pledged to Hillary Clinton. In the only poll done in Michigan so far reflecting the Democratic ballot, it's Hillary Clinton 48% and Uncommitted at 28%, with Kucinich at 3% and Dodd and Gravel at 1%.

Also, I understand the strategic interest in a Romney nomination, as he clearly would be the easiest to beat, but as an American I have to hope some one at least quarter way decent is the nominee: McCain, Huckabee, Paul, maybe even Thompson would be tolerable. But Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani are dangerous people and should not be messed around with.

exactly (0.00 / 0)
Good people of Michigan: If your candidate appears on the ballot, vote for them. Otherwise, vote Uncommitted, for the reasons alexwill states. Do not write-in your candidate (see below).

Today's New York Times describes the effort in Michigan to get people to show up to vote and vote Uncommitted. Also note:

Because neither Mr. Obama nor Mr. Edwards registered as write-in candidates, any write-in votes for them will be thrown out.
