Obama Rally in Manchester, NH

by: Bean in the 'Burbs

Sun Sep 14, 2008 at 20:56:25 PM EDT

(Great pictures. - promoted by Charley on the MTA)

Gates were slated to open at 8:00 a.m. for the 10:30 a.m. event, but when we arrived in Manchester at 8:10 on Saturday morning, the line already extended eight blocks through the city.  Those in line were good-humored about the wait - we met people who had travelled not just from Massachusetts and New Hampshire, but also from New York, Connecticut, Vermont and (!) South Carolina.  Vendors selling Obama buttons, hats and merchandise were everywhere and looked to be doing quite well for themselves.  The campaign also recognized the opportunity - a small army of volunteers worked the line with sign up sheets collecting names and contact information while we filed along the street toward the park.

By the time Obama arrived - on schedule just after 10:30 - the park was packed.  We had grabbed a spot just to the right of the press box, so we had a good view.

Bean in the 'Burbs :: Obama Rally in Manchester, NH
I was especially cheered by the overwhelming crowd response on energy policy.  The throng at this rally clearly didn't think we can drill our way out of our energy woes - they were full-throated in their approval for Obama's calls for investment in renewable energy and in retooling the US economy.

Obama took the opportunity to hit back at McCain for the last week's distortions.  The crowd was riled up and chanted "lies" in response to Obama's contrasts between his record and the crap the McCain campaign has been peddling about his tax plan, the lipstick comment and others.

At the end of the event, I asked the woman next to me how she had liked the speech.  She had come to the event as a supporter, she said, and was happy to have heard Obama in person.  "From the first time I heard him speak, I thought he was the future," she said, "at least the future I would want."

This was our favorite home-made sign at the event:

We also loved the "GOTV" vanity plate on this car we saw in the parking garage on our way out:

Very Cool. I hope there is another (0.00 / 0)
before the election.

Were there many McCain people holding signs?

When Kerry had rallies in Manchester in 2004 the streets were swarming with obnoxious shouting Bush slobs after the rallies.

We didn't see any Bushie protesters or sign holders (0.00 / 0)
Although we were well inside the park, and might not have seen a group if they were outside on the street.

There was a good Jean Shaheen contingent holding signs and recruiting volunteers, though.  Also, some supporters of Governor John Lynch.

Initially, I thought I saw some people wearing McCain-Palin t-shirts, but they turned out to be friendly wags whose t-shirts had a take-off on the McCain logo with the two names, a flying pig in place of the star and a tagline reading "when pigs fly."

Yes (3.00 / 2)
The invitation thing was a scam to acquire more e-mail addresses so they could bombard us begging for donations.

"Scam"? Sign up was voluntary, the campaign is open about the asks they'll make, (0.00 / 0)
and for those of us supporting the ticket, the presence of those volunteers is a reassuring sign of how disciplined and organized this campaign is.

Don't complain here about a democratic candidate whose campaign is smart enough to identify who shows up at the rallies.

When I responded (3.00 / 4)
There was no mention of signing up to be bombarded with e-mails begging for money. Fortunately I have a spam filter and I use it.
Secondly you're so excited about keeping non-democrats out. Lets see: in 2004, you caged dissenters, in 2008 you had a protest zone how many miles away?
Please: I gave up on pep rallies long ago. You folks are running scared. In November the other 60% of the electorate gets to participate.

Do you think they are just curious... (0.00 / 0)
...when they ask for your email address?  Of course they want to grow their list, and yes, many emails ask for money.  You can always unsubscribe and political campaigns honor those requests.  I am not in a position to give money, but I stay on the list anyway because other information comes out of those messages (like finding out about this rally, for example).  This is very smart grassroots strategy.

Couldn't make it (6.00 / 1)

My wife was busy canvassing in NH with our baby (we are not above shameless exploitation of our 1 yo's cuteness for this effort) while I stayed home with the rest of the crew.

She was pretty heartened at the response she got going door to door among undecideds.  Main feedback: It's the economy, stupid.

If you aren't interested/able to canvass, they can use people in NH for other tasks like data entry, etc.

Go north this fall!

Go Barack Obama and Joe Biden! (0.00 / 0)

Respond when they put out falsities!

It is an event like this that will demonstrate to all that you need to be our next president.

                      Yes we can!

                      Yes we should!

                      Yes we will!

I will respond (3.00 / 1)
When democrats put out falsities. Kerry is tossing out a whopper with his heating aid ad.

The Democrats are putting out falsies? (0.00 / 0)
Kerry is tossing out a whopper?

This campaign is getting interesting!

Shoe bomber, underwear bomber -- why aren't we waging war on clothes?
