Meh

(The Internet: the last best hope for the written word. - promoted by Bob)

The word 'meh' is being inducted into the Lexicological Hall of Fame (aka dictionary).  It is thought to have arisen in the USA but has recently inveigled itself into British parlance.

Until I read the story, I had no idea 'meh' wasn't yet a "real" word as defined by a dictionary entry.  Apparently neither are two of my other faves, 'heh' and 'hmm'.  (For that matter, is 'fave'?)

Laurel :: Meh
Oh...lest anyone think this is irrelevant and OT for this weighty blog, you know better, and you know who you are.  The word has even risen to the rank of Poll Option No. 3.

But I think the lexicographers might have missed a definition.  Joe, care to clarify the meaning of your mehtting of mittie?

  ha! romney ain't meh boy.  (0.00 / 0)
I look forward to Mike Huckabee sweeping the primaries.

Origin? (5.00 / 1)
My daughter claims that Bart Simpson is the originator of the word.

meh was indeed used in a simpsons episode. (0.00 / 0)
although that was not its debut appearance, it is likely its best known.

My guess is that Joe was using 'meh' as an alternative spelling of 'my' (0.00 / 0)
A dialectical spelling I suppose.

Sorry, I'm snark challenged sometimes. (0.00 / 0)

The two of you are snark-challenged (0.00 / 0)
and go off and play next door!?

Go figure.

Maybe I should offer a correspondence course.

What an obscure quote. (0.00 / 0)
But I was closer to being right than wrong.  Huck did better than Mitt.

Dictionaries don't define language (0.00 / 0)
Dictionaries do not define words. Dictionaries merely list the definitions of words. Words are defined by cultures (and slang words are defined by subcultures). A word is real as soon as a group of people start using it with a commonly understood meaning. A dictionary listing a word is an accomplishment for the publisher of the dictionary, not the word, the people who use the word, or anyone else. 'meh' has been a real word for several years now. So have 'heh', 'hmm', and 'fave'.

i guess i should have begun my diary with a ";)" (0.00 / 0)
since it is apparently not clear to my legions of readers that i wrote it with a light heart and a wink.  ah well.
