Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr. said there was not enough evidence to charge Marzilli with inappropriately touching a woman he drove home from a fund-raiser in Arlington in April.

Then it was too much to broom.... Leone said authorities are investigating allegations against the senator of inappropriate sexual contact with a woman in Brighton two years ago and in Arlington last year. Lowell police said that they are investigating reports from three other women who said Marzilli accosted them in Lowell Tuesday.

And don't forget the support he got from many on this site.

Indeed, the two are separated.

My point being thus: politically, the Marzilli mess was cleaned up to the best of Beacon Hill's ability. They can't control what happens at the judicial level. If a judge throws a case out because of a lack of evidence, you can't pin that on the political process. Lots and lots of cases are thrown out due to lack of evidence, probably more than are actually carried to fruition.

To think that judges don't play the game is naive.  If a judge wants to get a relative on the state payroll or needs a raise, then he or she had best be a team player.  This goes for DAs, magistrates, AGs as well as the judges.

No one was "smeared." People on the left were shocked and horrified about what happened. That's just pure revisionist BS.

Second, whether justice is denied or not, what relevance does that have to do with Beacon Hill politics? You brought the post up as some sort of example with what's wrong with Beacon Hill politics, but it's completely remote. The guy was thrown out of Beacon Hill.

Lastly, it is inherently difficult to prosecute people in this country. We set the system up so people were assumed innocent of crimes before proven guilty. We created a system where a single juror alters the case, where a single case of tampering can throw a result out. We've created our system this way for obvious reasons; we don't want innocent people going to prison. Sometimes that unfortunately means the guilty walk free -- but, again, that has positively nothing to do with Beacon Hill politics. It has everything to do with a choice this country made long, long ago and has stuck to ever since -- because we knew the result that happens when countries chose otherwise: tyranny.

I defended Gooch back when he was running because I didn't believe it affected his ability to be a state seantor, the incidents were isolated and he would get treated to avoid such behavior in the future. and his "passes" through the years and his amazing ability to rise above his mediocrity, aided and abetted by the monied Republican cabal to become the President of the United States.  The Peter Pan who finally grew up at what age?  40?  I think he referred to his own drug and alcohol issues as "youthful indiscretions."  The multiple businesses that he drove into the ground, and yet, trading on his famous last name, could run and win the Texas governership.  How about the eminent domain land-taking abuse he engaged in to built the Texas Rangers a stadium?  And then as President, goes "Greyhound" (leave the driving to us!) on foreign policy, leaving it to Cheney and company to execute (no pun intended.)  Poor George. He was treated so poooorly.

This is one lucky, lucky man.  If you think he's been abused, perhaps you should consider what the Bushies did to McCain in 2000, questioning his mental health status as a POW.

and I don't really think that was the case, given that he was allowed to call two decades of bacchanalia "youthful indiscretions" without so much as a bat of the eye - it was because it WAS two decades long of drunken and feckless behavior.  It wasn't just an OUI, it was all the things he had been bailed out from.  And because he played the evangelical card, no one dared question his sincerity.  The evangelicals learned fairly early on that Gee Dubyah was no evangelical, that is was all just a fascade.

How did he vote on other alcohol related issues?  Taxes, for example?

Where does he stand on combining offenses to avoid automatic penalty triggers?

And so on.

There has been a LOT of legislation on teh subject in recent year - did his (apparent) personal failing affect his votes?
