WRKO suspends John DePetro for anti-gay slur

by: David

Wed Jul 19, 2006 at 08:39:02 AM EDT

WRKO (680 AM) suspended talk radio loudmouth John DePetro for referring to Turnpike Chairman Matt Amorello as a "fag."  In an additional, highly insightful analysis of the Big Dig situation, DePetro described Amorello as a "sissy boy."

Hey, guess what John?  You're an asshole.  And no one can suspend me for saying so.

According to Jason Wolfe, vice president of programming at WRKO, "This corporation has zero tolerance for racial intolerance. Mr. DePetro has 72 hours to think about it."  According to the Globe, "Wolfe said he purposely chose the word 'racial' because 'people will lump everything in together.' "  I'm not sure exactly what that means, but whatever.

Question (0.00 / 0)
Is "sissy boy" suspension worthy? Or was it just the "fag matt" comment?

Someone who uses the word fag to describe a heterosexual acting in a lame manner is not necessarily anti-gay. In fact, sorry to tell you, the word has become so common that it is routinely used by the less enlightened, kids, and young adults to refer to lame heteros. And of course homos.  As in, “Ya think he’s a real fag?â€

Stupid thing to say, but when compared to real hate speech sputtered daily on that station and its sister sports station makes me think this is just a ploy to call attention to a talk show few people listen to on a radio station that was once pretty good.

Ernie Boch, III is not related to Ernie Boch, Jr. however he does hope to be in his will.

Justice for Tookie

It's not a ploy... (0.00 / 0)
...because just as you point out that some do not take the word "fag" seriously ... others do. And apparently, some of those others include the management at WBUR.

You mean WRKO, of course. (0.00 / 0)

Right, thank you. (0.00 / 0)

I agree... (0.00 / 0)
This does absolutely nothing to hurt the host. It's a pat on the back for boosting the ratings and a three day summer vacation.

And yeah, I don't listen to WRKO, but WEEI goes out of its way to offend people on the morning and afternoon drive shows....and the listeners love it.
