Lynch-pin: 9th District attack ad ties Lynch to Big Dig

by: janalfi

Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 09:03:18 AM EDT

( - promoted by Bob)

Jack E. Robinson, the Republican running for the 9th District seat, has just released a radio ad that tries to tie current Rep. Stephen Lynch to the Big Dig ugliness.

While the ad itself is creepy and misleading, I'm wondering what effect it might have on the campaign of Phil Dunkelbarger.  The prevailing wisdom about attack ads is that they affect both the victim and the target negatively but often give a boost to a candidate outside the mud fight.  In this case, that would be the other Democrat in the race, Phil Dunkelbarger, a mini-Lamont, anti-war candidate.

At the very least, the media attention might turn to the race and, IMHO, that would only help Dunkelbarger.  What intrigues me is the timing of the ad - before the Democratic primary.  Is Robinson trying to help Dunkelbarger?  Does he think he might have a better chance against an unknown Democrat?

I think this could be good for Dunkelbarger if he stays above the fray and uses the press attention to get his message out.  Frankly, I'm surprised that he isn't getting more attention from the Lamont win.  I mean, the Globe did an article on anti-war candidates running against incumbents across the country and didn't even mention the race in their own hometown.  What's up with that?

Disclosure:  I am coordinator for South of Boston Democracy for America.  We have endorsed Phil Dunkelbarger for Congress in the 9th District.

Is this 2000 Senate candidate Jack Robinson? (0.00 / 0)
The guy who managed to have a car accident during a radio interview?
Wikipedia doesn't say, it doesn't have an article for Kennedy's last Senate
campaign (which was of course a joke).

Yep. I know his dad better. (6.00 / 1)
He's out on Martha's Vineyard running campaign schools, and told me that he had told the son he didn't have a prayer in 2000.

BTW - I am SUCH a hack that I was LITERALLY the only person who showed up for his 'stand out' at Park St. Station.  Sen. Tolman walked by, and asked if he could please have a campaign button for his collection.  I gave him mine.

What three person race are you talking about? (0.00 / 0)
It's a two person race in the Primary (Lynch and Dunkelbarger) and a two person race in the general (the Dem winner--sorry, but it will be Stevie) and Jack E.)

You never know (0.00 / 0)
I imagine Steve won't get more than 75% of the vote w/anyone else running against him - so, if people know the facts, Dunkelbarger does have a legitimate shot at winning. It's all about the media covering the race and, coincidentally, NECN and the Globe are both doing stories on him as we speak. As the election campaign heats up, he'll get more press coverage. He's a *major* underdog, but it's not impossible.

Two things: (0.00 / 0)
1. Dunkelbarger is getting an article in the Globe shortly (per his email I got) and

2. He should definately remain above the fray, issuing a press release denouncing the ad. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it's also pragmatic as it will get him PR ROFL. Sometimes doing the right thing is the right thing to do =p

Dunkelbarger for Congress (0.00 / 0)
Chet Curtis interviews Phil on NECN tonight at 8:00 PM.

I'm ready for the show. I've got my popcorn and killer Diet Coke.

The Boston Globe will run a story on Phil this Sunday by Mr. Preer.

Hear Phil on Saint Kermit (0.00 / 0)
We interviewed Phil on Saint Kermit for our current show.  Take a listen in if you are interested (http://podcast.saint...).  He has some good thoughts on technological reforms of Congress, amongst other things.

SK-Jim, I'd like to listen to your interview of Phil on Saint Kermit.  I'm low tech, no tech.  Can I get there from here?

Phil Dunkelbarger interview on Saint Kermit (0.00 / 0)
Thanks SK-Jim, I found the right spot to click to hear the program.  I should have tried that to begin with but I thought I would only hear the man singing.  I was clicking on Dunkelbarger so I was just getting his site. Then when I read "podcast", I thought maybe I had to have an ipod.  You were very kind to offer assistance. You saved me from having to ask my grandchildren for help. I can see them now, rolling back their eyes at each other.

Saint Kermit is very well done.  You have have a great sound.  I really enjoyed it.  It's handy, I'll be able to tune in at work.

I especially enjoyed the piece on Phil Dunkelbarger.  Phil calling Stephen Lynch a Republicrat then giving us the facts to back it up, is exactly the reason I'll be voting to give Lynch the boot.

For me, the most important issue is the war.  How anyone could vote for more misery is beyond me. But Lynch does, when he voted for H.R.861 "stay the course".  On that vote I was suprised so many of the (R) gang even voted for it, after knowing the American people have had enought of war, and could see that no good was coming out of our actions in Iraq.

Thanks to Saint Kermit for getting the word out.
