Gabrieli campaign's dime-dropping backfires

by: David

Sun Sep 17, 2006 at 13:57:09 PM EDT

BMG News has learned who has been spreading a DFA email to the press in hopes of proving that Deval Patrick is ... what?  I don't know, exactly.

Anyway, it was the Gabrieli campaign.

From: "Becky Deusser" [bdeusser@gabrieli.org]
To: xxx
Sent: xxx
Subject: Dean People helping Deval

----Forwarded message ----------
From: Jim Dean, Democracy for America [info@democracyforamerica.com]
Date: Sep 15, 2006 10:41 PM
Subject: Deval Patrick: The final push

[and there follows the text of the DFA email that urges DFA members to "keep making phone calls and knocking on doors."]

I love the subject line - "Dean People helping Deval."  Ooooohhh - "Dean People"!  Boogity boogity!  Why the Gabs people thought this was some kind of "gotcha" is completely beyond me.  First, there is no news here.  DFA endorsed Patrick months ago, and he's been featured on their "DFA-list" website ever since.  Second, a big part of DFA's mission is to enlist and engage committed volunteers to work for candidates who advance progressive values.  So here, the progressive candidate who has built a genuine grassroots movement is - surprise! - being backed by a progressive organization whose purpose is to back genuine grassroots movements.

IMHO, the Gabbers just end up looking silly for spreading this email around.  As noted below, Jon Keller - not exactly a charter member of the alleged "loony left" - got this one exactly right:

... and the problem with this is ... what?  If the implication is that Patrick is another version of Howard Dean, too lefty for prime-time and bound to blow up at an inopportune moment, sorry, I’m not buying.... If the Democratic Party is going to bet on a liberal this year, better that it be someone with legitimate grassroots support who’s actually been pounding the pavement for the last couple of years talking with real people, rather than some aloof elected official anointed by clueless party insiders.

Another goofy robocall (0.00 / 0)
I got one, apparently from the Gabrieli campaign, where a woman with a relative who could benefit from stem-cell research said "that's why I'm so upset at Kerry Healey's attacks on Steve Gabrieli".  I'll admit I didn't listen to the end to see whether there was even an argument concerning the primary election.

I haven't checked my phone messages in a couple of days, but as a registered Democrat in Amherst I've so far received a call from a real human backing Patrick, a recording of Rep. McGovern backing Murray, and this recorded lady backing Gabrieli.

Patrick has got more signs out and a few Gabrieli signs have appeared, but they are largely in semipublic places like in front of a closed auto dealership.  The Patrick signs are generally on individual resident's lawns.

"Steve Gabrieli" (6.00 / 1)
I hope that's a typo, and not what the robocaller actually said!  :-)

I hope (0.00 / 0)
it IS what the robocaller actually said!  ;-)

How funny would that be?

[ Parent ]
It would be funny (0.00 / 0)
but it was just my own brain-fart, sorry.  Is Patrick more electable because of his more memorable first name?

[ Parent ]
depends (0.00 / 0)
... on how many Gabrielis are running!

[ Parent ]
Could it be??? A Howard Dean conspiracy??? (6.00 / 2)
Howard Dean was running against:
John F. Kerry, 10 Louisburg Square, Boston MA 02108

Now there are complaints ofHoward Dean helping Patrick coming from the neighborhood of:
Christopher Gabrieli, 8 Louisburg Square, Boston MA 02108

Did the Herald reporter on the trash stakeout know he was next door to our junior senator's trash?  It could have been a two-fer.

What's the difference between Chris Gabrieli and Howard Dean?
Howard Dean has won an election.

 Only the cod is sacred.

Too bad they did not publish the whole letter (6.00 / 1)
Maybe it would get out to more people that way. We could always use the extra help phone banking. :D

Spread the e-mail around! (6.00 / 1)
Brandeis DFA has been *extremely* active for Deval, and I know many other great DFA groups have been working hard for Deval too. Make no mistake: Jim Dean's organization has indeed been helping Deval, so in essence, yes, Dean People have been helping Deval. Cool!

Dean People (6.00 / 2)
'Dean people' basically means a bunch of Democrats.  Curse those Democrats for campaigning!  They must be al-Qaeda sympathizers.

Why does Chris hate Democrats? (6.00 / 1)
In the past few days, Gabrieli has been pushing the "doesn't matter if it's a Democrat idea..." shtick, arguing that Patrick got the endorsement of the extreme fringe of the party and then saying that Patrick, who really shares many of the same views as him, was "too liberal to be elected."

It doesn't surprise me at all that he's attacking "the Dean people" when its been clear all along that he has no respect for those party activists that he's going to need if he gets past Tuesday.

Exactly (0.00 / 0)
This has been an issue when pointed out that has cost Gabrieli  several voters that I know of.  Don't be a coward.  Stand up for what you believe in and don't be ashamed to be a Dem.  Is the party perfect?  Hell no.  One reason is because of those without the guts to stand up for themselves and their beliefs.  And its a whole lot better than the alternative.

Fringe element? (0.00 / 0)
347 Democrats showed up at Arlington Town Hall to elect delegates to the stae convention.  Deval Patrick got 90% of the vote in the caucus.  Deval Patrick has the support of the entire legislative delegation (senator, three state representatives), a majority of the Board of Selectmen and School Committee.

There are elected officials who were leading supporters of Tolman, O'Brien, Reich, and Birmingham in 2002 - all are with Deval Patrick this year.

Sorry, Chris.  There's just too many of us to be a fringe operation.

 Only the cod is sacred.

Democracy (0.00 / 0)
I joined DEMOCRACY For America, not Dean For America.  I'm for Democracy and Democrats and Gabrielli is...the last I looked his commercials seems to downplay the fact that he is a Democrat while Deval Patrick is Proud to be a Democrat.  Me Too!  I can not WAIT for Wednesday morning.  It gives me a chance to relax...until Thursday Night when I'll be running a Mass Victory 06 Phone Bank in Somerville.

Whose primary is it anyway? (6.00 / 1)
Want any more proof that Gabrielli sounds like a Republican in a Democratic Primary in a Blue State?  Here's an excerpt from today's Boston Herald Monday morning briefing:

Republicans
  Holly Robichaud:

With low turnout expected tomorrow, we will see the ultra-left wing of the Democrat Party vote. They are not normal. They want tuition breaks for illegal aliens, socialized medicine, higher taxes and increased state spending. They are (Howard) Dean Democrats and their biggest issue is moving the party away from the middle and back to the left.
Holly Robichaud is a Republican strategist.
  Jim Rappaport:
For Democrats it should be: “which candidate for governor gives our party the best chance to win in November?” The Democrats can look for liberal purity or look for the centrist who can win. Most Republicans I have talked with have said they worry most about Gabrieli, as they believe that he can beat the Republican nominee. For Republicans, no one will show up for the primary election day (myself included), since there are no elections being contested.
Jim Rappaport was a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor in 2002.

Poor Kerry Healey.  No wonder why she ran those anti-Gabrieli ads.  She thought Chris was running against her in a Republican primary!

 Only the cod is sacred.
