Healey picks up support from ... well, you tell me

by: David

Thu Sep 21, 2006 at 23:02:01 PM EDT

How to describe this?  It's courtesy of sharp-eyed Adam Reilly at the Phoenix, who apparently makes the Taunton Gazette one of his daily reads!

"I voted for Reilly, but now I am going with Healey, because I have heard that Patrick supports the idea of giving in-state tuition rates to children of illegal immigrants," said Charlie Flannery, owner of Flannery Real Estate in Taunton. "I think having a republican governor will help maintain a balance of power in a predominantly Democrat-run state - and she is a babe."

As Adam notes, the state's foremost proponent of in-state tuition for children of undocumented immigrants is: Tom Reilly.  D'oh!  Plus, "she is a babe"??  My goodness.  Well, Mr. Flannery, I'm sure Team Healey is psyched to have you ... maybe.

Adam also points to a SHNS item in which Rep. Eugene "Portugal" O'Flaherty (among other hacks) castigates Deval Patrick for being too much of a lefty.

O'Flaherty, the House Judiciary Committee chair who supported Attorney General Thomas Reilly's campaign, told reporters, "I support the Democratic nominee but I would also want to make it clear that I think in order for the Democratic nominee to become electable, what has to happen is he has to get rid of the notion that has been percolating around out there that he is a liberal left-leaning individual that will bring Massachusetts back to what some have referred to as the 'Mike Dukakis era..' "

O'Flaherty added: "He needs to make that case over the next several weeks to Democrats like myself who have been increasingly frustrated over the last 16 years over the ability of Republicans to divide Democrats" and cause some to leave the party. In order for conservative Democrats to be comfortable with Patrick, "we need to know a little bit more about him. "It has to be a little bit more than 'Together, We Can'," O'Flaherty said, referring to Patrick's campaign slogan.

As Adam correctly notes, O'Flaherty might as well have been reading from Kerry Healey's debate prep book.  Reportedly, the Patrick campaign declined comment, no doubt because they're too polite.

Fortunately, I'm not.  Guess what, Eugene: it's "Democrats like yourself" that have given Kerry Healey whatever chance she has of winning this election.  O'Flaherty, aptly deemed "The Zell Miller of Charlestown" by Charley, is particularly at fault for this situation: as chair of the House Judiciary Committee, he was the one who engineered the now-notorious watering-down of the drunk driving bill that eventually became Melanie's Law.  In case you had forgotten his shameful performance:

O'Flaherty and a little band of colleagues, who also happen to be active defense lawyers, effectively watered the bill down, dominated the debate, and successfully blocked legislators from presenting the original legislation for an up or down vote.

After he lost one key amendment, O'Flaherty was seen near the rostrum harshly cussing and warning legislative opponents in no uncertain terms that he would exact revenge.

After he and his colleagues neutered the bill and then jetted off to Portugal, Mitt Romney successfully pressed the legislators still in this country to restore several of the original, tougher provisions of the bill.

Interesting footnote: news coverage at the relevant time - late October, 2005 - makes no mention of Healey's alleged role in restoring the tougher provisions.  In fact, a Google search for Globe articles including "Healey" and "Melanie's" picks up not a single article from late October of 2005.  In contrast, a search  for Globe articles including "Romney" and "Melanie's" picks up at least four articles from that time period - and Kerry Healey is not mentioned in any of them.  A couple weeks back, when Healey's ad touting her alleged role in re-toughening the bill came out, Charley wrote

I'll bet no one remembers Kerry Healey from the whole contretemps. I'll bet that this is the first that most people have heard that Kerry Healey had a significant role in passing that or any other law.

Well, she sure slipped her role past the Globe.

In any event, the legislature's - specifically, Rep. O'Flaherty's - absurd performance on Melanie's Law has given Kerry Healey one of her best campaign issues, and has helped making running against the legislature a strategy that could gain real traction.  And O'Flaherty thinks he is in a position to tell Deval Patrick how to win?

Um, no.

The Hacks start hacking... (0.00 / 0)
Did they have to start so soon?  Sure we expected the legislators due to lose large chunks of undeserved clout under Governor Patrick to begin to machete Deval's campaign, but couldn't they wait a few more days before they started humping for Healey.
Of course they have nothing to lose.  Baddour is rather embarrassing for the Senate leadership, what with shining their shoes (while on the foot) and all.  And O'Flaherty is the institution's permanent roadblock, unless the bill is guaranteeing jobs (let's start at 250) for his friends at Probation.  They could only maintain viability if Healey (or another R) stayed in the corner.

For Eugene "Little Finn" O'Flaherty's part, what will get lost in his panting support of the LG is how miserably he's treated her over the past two years.  Geno credits her with all that is good in the world now, but when it came to pushing her bills out of the Judiciary, even the ones that were good and improve public safety (you're right geno, what's that got to do with legislating) he buried them along with 1500 other bills.
And Stevie Baddour, King of Transportation (you can't spell transportation without p-o-r-k), which includes tunnels and Amorellos, doesn't exactly conjure up images of government let alone good government.  Mitt vetoed his bills without bothering to read 'em.

A cynic might say that Geno's incomprehensible mishandling of the drunk driving bill (allowing Mitt and Murph the opportunity to politick this to death) and his ongoing resistance to her mandatory supervision bill for ex-cons might be a set-up for her tough-on-crime platform.  Or he could be just plain dumb.

If I were Murph, with friends like these two, well you know.
But, I hear the Lisbon Coast is really nice around November 8th.

Memo to O'Flaherty (0.00 / 0)
People like Deval Patrick have spent months trying to unify democrats.

Meanwhile, O'flaherty says this gem:

O'Flaherty added: "He needs to make that case over the next several weeks to Democrats like myself who have been increasingly frustrated over the last 16 years over the ability of Republicans to divide Democrats" and cause some to leave the party.

And he wonders why democrats seem fractuous? IS HE AN IDIOT? Someone better challenge him next election cycle. I'll volunteer and donate to any progressive who challenges him.

Democrats can't stand for that. He should lose any and all of his prestige within the legislature - his chair should be immediately stripped for being so disloyal. IF YOU DON'T HAVE SOMETHING GOOD TO SAY THEN SHUT THE HELL UP.

I don't have a problem with open debate, but I do have a problem when so-called "leaders" of the party take cracks at our soon-to-be Governor. This really feeds the theory that a lot of people in the House and Senate are afraid of a powerful Democratic force in the Corner's Office. Suddenly, it won't be all about them.

I thought O'Flaherty was about to endorse Healey he gushed so much... (0.00 / 0)
The love fest by O'Flaherty at yesterday's press conference was unbelievable- he is just pathetic.

What I over heard at the polls was disturbing... (0.00 / 0)
I hung out all day in a moderate suburban community (which Deval of course won) and I heard lots of Gabrieli and Reilly supporters sounding a lot like Mr. Flannery in Tauton (which I was no where near).

They sounded like Howie Carr, saying that the "liberals" will raise our taxes, let the illegals in...blah, blah. blah.  They all sounded like they were staying home (but will probably vote for Christy.)

The must unbelievable thing was a cop who looked at a Gabrieli sign holder and said something like, "He's my guy, if he doesn't win, I'm voting for Healey".  Without thinking (becuase I generally don't like to imply to cops that they are stupid) I said, "Romneny Healey have cut local aid and a vote for Healey is a vote to lay-off more cops."

He looked at me, at first annoyed that I caught him in a contradiction and then said, "Ahh, they're all the same".

I am glad that it does appear that Deval attracts indepenedents, because we are going to lose "Ed King" Democrats at a far bigger rate since 1994 or even 1988.

My biggest reason for jumping the Deval ship (0.00 / 0)
The moment I recalled to my Senate District Tellar at the Convention "Deval Patrick."  I was petrified at the gross migration of lunchbucket/conservative dems that will jump ship to Christy.  They couldn't vote for a Republican but an Independant wouldn't be so bad.

I am completely and 100% devoted to helping Deval - not becuase I like him but because he is a Democrat and HOPEFULLY he will be better than Kerry Healey.  We do need to find a way to stop the hemoraging however.  50% of Democratic Primary voters did NOT vote for Deval.  Granted he won by a landslide and his victory was impressive but 50% of Dem Primary Voters did not Vote for him.  The Dem's and Deval have to seriuosly start courting Reily and Gabrieli's people.

[ Parent ]
of course they'll do that (0.00 / 0)
Given Reilly's concession speech and Gabrieli's presense at the victory party, all parties are obviously aware of the predicament. Deval's entire message has been about inclusion in the Democratic process, 'this is your race.' It's not merely rhetoric; he clearly knows that people need to have a stake in it if his grassroots organization are going to work.

Will some Gabrieli and Reilly supporters be turned off by Deval? Of course. However, the vast majority will be won over both by Deval's impressive political skills and message of hope, as well as the fact that Reilly and Gabrieli have both come on with a strong message of party unity.

Party unity. That's what this whole post-election thing has been about. I've never seen so many party forces organized and unified after a primary. We know we need to win this, we know we have a strong candidate and we know we have to work hard to help him win. It's going to happen.

Inclusion Ryan? (0.00 / 0)
I don’t feel like Deval wants any part of me, other than my vote. I certainly don't feel that the state party and Phil Johnston want any part of me.
Deval’s message is one of inclusion, but his actions, through his friends, is definitely one of "stay away" unless you drink the Kool-Aid

"50% of Dem Primary Voters did not Vote for him" (6.00 / 2)
While this is true, I think it's pretty much irrelevant.  It was a three-way primary among three strong candidates.  It would have been shocking for any one of them to poll under 20%, which means the fact that one of them got 50% is extraordinary.

I mean, look at the LG race.  There, MORE than 50% of Democrats didn't vote for Tim Murray.  Would you seriously suggest that somehow he's not the legit nominee, or that there's any evidence of "hemorrhaging" because of that vote?  Come on.  It's just the nature of 3-way races.

[ Parent ]
Did they vote for or against? (0.00 / 0)
If they voted for Reilly or Gabrieli, then I don't think it will be a problem in November.

If, however, they voted against Patrick, then I think it may be a problem in November.

The Dems have to hope that enough of the Dems+Unenrolleds break for Patrick (or at the least Mihos, and not to Ross) and not Healey.

Romney won with 1,050,000 votes.  Deval Patrick got 450,000 on Tuesday.  If 60% of the Gabs+Reilly voters vote Patrick, he'll get another 270,000.  So, he's got to grab those, and work some GOTV from Dems who didn't vote in the primary.  450k+270k = 820,000 votes.  If he can get another 300,000 from voters who didn't vote in the primary, he's got a good chance.

Don't forget Christy (0.00 / 0)
Nice breakdown stomv, but I would add that Mitt didn't have a Mihos to deal with.  Christy will definitely get more than than the combined 5% Stein, Howell and Johnson picked up in '02 and most of that is coming from the right-leaning moderates we are talking about.

Why wasn't O'Flaherty opposed? (0.00 / 0)
I thought someone from Charlestown was supposed to run against O'Flaherty.  What happened?

1.  So, let me get it straight.  healy is responsible for all of the bad things that happened during the Romnet administration, but is entitled to zero credit for any instance in which the present governor acheived something beneficial in the face of opposition from the pro-corruption wing of the Democratic party.  Sounds like yay, team cheerleading.

2.  O'Flaherty's point isn't necessarily wrong; it has been noted by many on this site, including me, that DP's first impression was not unlike that of the Dean or Kucinich campaigns.  Unlike Dean or Kucinich, DP has proven to be a more skillful politician, and has demonstrated the ability to draw support from moderates and independents.  Now he needs to do it on a greater scale, which will be difficult.

3.  Of course the response to these guys is an attempt to defend their turf; their response lends great credence to your argument that Patrick will be better able to rein in the corrupt elements of the legislature than the Reublicans.  And of course Healy will run against the legislature, as did Romney and Celucci, etc.  Maybe DP could neutralize this advantage by laying into these guys like Cotton Mather into a Catholic, especially if he can get to their right on something.  If he wins, then he can break them.

Chelsea (0.00 / 0)
BTW, O'Flaherty is actually from Chelsea, not Charlestown. So, "Zell Miller of Charlestown" is, alas, not so apt. Bummer. Sounded good at the time.
