Healey is Soft on Crime Prevention

by: Greg

Mon Oct 09, 2006 at 12:32:30 PM EDT

(In a nutshell ... - promoted by Charley on the MTA)

This started as a comment to Charley's post about what themes he should raise on NECN tonight, but grew to deserve its own post. I say Charley, and all of us generally, should strike back hard at Healey's perceived strength, as johnk has done in his recent post. Healey doesn't have a plan to truly reduce crime in the state. Put simply, she is soft on crime prevention. Crime prevention requires . . .

  1. Restoring local aid
    We need to restore local to boost community policing and prevent crime at the local level, as this state has done in the past. Local aid cannot be restored if we roll back the income tax further and rely on the property tax to fund crime prevention. Deval Patrick is opposed to shifting the burden of crime prevention onto the property tax and cash-strapped local communities.

  2. Getting serious about gun control
    Kerry Healey receives an 'A-' from the National Rifle Association, as well as their endorsement. You can't be serious about reducing urban gun violence when you receive high marks from an organization whose sole purpose is increasing access to guns. Deval Patrick, who receives a 'D' from NRA, is serious about gun control, particularly about fighting illegal gun trafficking in the state.

  3. Getting tough on corporate crime
    Romney/Healey has looked the other way as one of their campaign contributors, Bechtel, has cost the state a fortune through Big Dig cost overruns, structural defects, and now the tragic death of Milena Del Valle. While at Coca-Cola, Patrick took on Bechtel over another over-budget, delayed construction project and won. Healey is soft on corporate crime.

2nd Amendment (0.00 / 0)
Where does Deval stand on it?

from his website (0.00 / 0)
  * End Gang and Gun Violence.  The resurgence of gang violence in Massachusetts must be stopped and will be in my administration.  In addition to a renewed commitment to community policing, we will

  o restore the law enforcement, public health and community-based strategies that worked in the 1990s and support the Urban Violence Reduction Initiative undertaken by several urban mayors;
  o revive the coordination between state and local police and federal law enforcement throughout the region to attack illegal gun trafficking into Massachusetts at the source;
  o limit gun purchases in Massachusetts to one firearm per month;
  o ensure that private sellers such as those at gun shows are subjected to the same reviews and checks as licensed dealers;
  o require background checks of purchasers at gun shows and from private dealers; and
  o strengthen the ability of prosecutors to protect witnesses of gang violence.

To ensure safe schools for students and teachers, we will renew our commitment to conflict resolution and peer mediation programs that help dramatically reduce violence in schools by offering peaceful alternatives to resolving disputes.

It's a fine Amendment (0.00 / 0)
It just has nothing to do with private ownership of firearms, a position taken by every US Attorney General until guess who? Yeah, John Coverthebreastsofjustice Asscroft.

School Safety (0.00 / 0)
With all the attention to school violence, I'm surprised the media haven't focused on the dismantling of hate crimes and bullying prevention programs at the state level. Bullying drives its targets to violence, yet Romney-Healey can't be bothered to get tough on crime until after it's happened.

Bechtel (0.00 / 0)
The contract with Bechtel was structured is such a way that Bechtel has only a nominal financial liability.  If we want to start getting tough on corporate crime I recommend pointing the fingers at our elected officials for allowing this kind of gross misconduct to occur.  It’s just another reason that our Government shouldn’t get anymore of our tax money to waste.  I mean, are there any guarantees that if we restore local aid, our locally elected officials will lower property taxes?

Laughable (0.00 / 0)
More sham recommendations by someone who thinks that he can fix the symptoms of moral decay by limiting the rights of the law abiding, rather than having the courage to address the root causes of the problem.

And those would be what, exactly? (0.00 / 0)
