(Wow. Quite an amazing column, especially considering its presence in the former stomping grounds of arch-conservative William Loeb. Here's the lede: "I'm going to jump right in, before another letter is published regarding civil unions and label as a bigoted homophobe every one of you sitting at your computers preparing to decry the moral degradation of New Hampshire." Heh. - promoted by David)
This opinion column ran in the Manchester Union Leader yesterday. Now I know that opinions expressed in this weekly column aren't necessarily those of the Union Leader, but as someone who grew up in NH I can tell you that the changes in the social outlook in the Granite State are awe inspiring to me. Nothing like this would have ever been printed in the Union Leader when I was in high school. It is not wise to count one's chickens before they hatch as the civil union bill is not yet law, but the thought that my husband and I might be able to cross the border to visit my Mother without constructively "divorcing" at exit 1 on 93 has me beaming with pride. I think this guy gets it completely right. This is not a matter of personal taste or opinion or religious devotion it is a matter of civil rights. It is time for the stigma associated with homosexuality to shift to those who would treat us as less than the fully deserving human beings we are.
