BostonNOW: A learning curve for politics.

by: Charley on the MTA

Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 20:17:47 PM EDT

Or maybe it's a learning curl ... A reader points out the following hilarity, from the new kid on the block, BostonNOW:

So guys, Devaney's not an "aide" to the Governor, nor is she really his "councilor", although she does confusingly sit on the "Governor's Council", which is a group of elected officials who advise the Governor on approve judicial appointments [clarification by David]. (Yeah, it's goofy.) And yes, this is one of many things about which I had no clue before I did this blog.

So, if you're counting on BostonNOW to give you your daily precis of the day's news ... caveat lector -- even more than normal. (Luckily, they do allow comments on their site, and someone's corrected them already.)

I have been very dissappointed in their paper so far (0.00 / 0)
they seem to want to out Herald the Herald and make it free. It is definitely not something I will be reading on my daily train ride.

Ouch. (6.00 / 1)
That is deeply embarrassing.

Governor's Council a relic of colonial times (0.00 / 0)
Back when it was created, the Governor's Council performed an important function as a check on the Governor - who was appointed by the King.

It is a relic, (0.00 / 0)
but it retained a pretty important function in MA government up through the early 1960s -- it is written into the state Constitution (and so has a definite function in the post-King days), and state law is riddled with functions that the Governor can only perform with the concurrence of the Council.  However, in the 1960s, corruption on the Council became so rampant (one or two of them went to prison, IIRC), that the lege passed a law that in one fell swoop repealed almost every statutory function that they had ever been given.  But, of course, repealing their constitutional functions requires a constitutional amendment, and that hasn't happened yet.  So they lumber on, approving judges and spending warrants, and doing a couple of other modest tasks.
