(Hi Mark. - promoted by Bob)

Hello,

My name is Mark Ciommo and I am running for the open Allston-Brighton District 9 seat on the Boston City Council. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to also ask for your support in this upcoming election.

I was born into a working class family and raised by my single mother in Allston-Brighton. I know a good community can make a difference in the lives of its citizens because Allston-Brighton made a difference in my life. Growing up without a father, I looked to coaches, teachers, and community activists for inspiration and guidance.

With hard work and determination I became the first person in my family to earn a college degree, graduating with a B.S. from Suffolk University. I worked my way through High School and College as a custodian at the Franciscan Children?s Hospital, a food deliverer at St. Elizabeth?s Hospital, and also by delivering flowers for Minihane?s Florist.

For more than two decades I have tried to make a difference in the lives of the people of my community. I have served youth in Boston as a youth out-reach worker, a teacher for at-risk youth, and as a coach for youth sports. As the Executive Director of the Veronica B. Smith Multi-Service Senior Center, a position I have held for over 14 years, I provide services for seniors in my community. As a founding member of the Allston-Brighton Healthy Boston Coalition, I helped develop the Leadership in Neighborhood Communication and Services Program (LINCS) to educate immigrants and new residents about services and programs in our community. I served as an appointed representative on the Public Safety Advisory Committee for Community Policing and am a founding Steering Committee member of the Thomas M. Gardner Extended Services School.

I am proud to say that I am endorsed by Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral, Dale Mitchell of the LGBT Aging Project, as well as 2002 candidates for Allston-Brighton District City Council Dan McLaughlin and Arturo Vasquez.

I am also endorsed by several labor unions including:

  • Painters and Allied Trades District Council # 35
  • United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local # 1445
  • Operating Engineers Local # 4
  • Boston School Custodians Local # 1952
  • International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local # 2222
  • Boston Carmen?s Union Local # 589
  • Carpenters Local # 40
  • and AFSCME Corrections Officers Local # 419

I want to thank the administrators and members of BlueMassGroup for maintaining such a vibrant forum for progressive ideas. I hope you will share with me what you think are the most important issues to Allston-Brighton and Boston at-large.

    Thank You,

    Mark

    Hi Mark, (0.00 / 0)
and welcome. I was wondering if you could tell us a little bit about your positions on...

-reforming the Boston Redevelopment Authority, specifically separating the permitting and planning sections

-affordable housing, rent control and tenant's rights

-improving the quality of service on the Green line, and MBTA bus routes in A-B

-Governor Patrick's proposal to built a commuter rail station on or near the lot currently owned by Harvard where the CSX rail yard is located

    -Equal Marriage rights

    -A woman's right to choose

-restaraunts and other businesses looking for licences to be open 24 hours

-rebuiling relations between the student and non-student elements of our community

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere- MLK, letter from a Birmingham jail

    Hey Dave, (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for giving me a chance to speak about these issues.

  • reforming the Boston Redevelopment Authority, specifically separating the permitting and planning sections

Yes, I support reforming the BRA.

Most major American cities have a separate planning department. I think Boston should as well. With so many institutions planning large expansions in Allston-Brighton, we would especially benefit from a separate planning department that could take into consideration the long term interests of our neighborhood.

  • affordable housing, rent control and tenant's rights

I want to promote affordable housing but I don?t support rent control or collective bargaining. Studies by progressive economists Paul Krugman, have shown that rent control is not an effective means of providing affordable housing.

    Instead I will work to:

    - Improve the ?Inclusionary Zoning? law.
    - Adopt a housing voucher finance system.
    - Increase ISD enforcement.
    - Work to promote public and private partnerships to increase home ownership and affordable rental properties for working families.
    - Press colleges and universities to house all of their students.

  • Improving the quality of service on the Green line, and MBTA bus routes in A-B

Having excellent public transportation is essential to keeping Allston-Brighton a community of families who will invest in our community. I will work with state and MBTA officials to implement measures to improve the quality and frequency of T and bus services.

  • Governor Patrick's proposal to build a commuter rail station on or near the lot currently owned by Harvard where the CSX rail yard is located

Again, additional transportation will make Allston-Brighton more appealing to young professionals and families.

I support proposals that would provide commuter rail access to Allston-Brighton.

  • Equal Marriage rights

    I support Marriage Equality.

I have always been a leading voice in my community on issues of equality. As I mentioned in my introduction, I am endorsed by Dale Mitchell of the LGBT Aging Project.

  • A woman's right to choose

    I am pro-choice

  • restaurants and other businesses looking for licenses to be open 24 hours

I do not see any significant community benefit to allowing businesses to remain open 24 hours.

However, I would want to review these on a case by case basis.

  • rebuilding relations between the student and non-student elements of our community

I am not sure if I would use the word ?rebuild? but I do understand the sentiment that you are conveying. I think there is a disconnect between the students and the residents of our community. I have worked with young people for over two decades as a teacher, outreach worker, and coach. I have helped bring youth into the community before. Getting college students involved in the community will certainly help strengthen this relationship.

Also, I believe that if colleges and universities house all of their students, the relationship would be improved greatly.
