Romney falsifies archived press releases deleting Larry Craig's name

by: tblade

Thu Aug 30, 2007 at 11:49:42 AM EDT

(Wow. This is pathetic -- I mean, no one is claiming that Romney knew about Craig's behavior, so why is he so terrified? What a maroon. - promoted by David)

First, Mitt linked his former Senate liason, Republican Senator Larry Craig, to Bill Clinton and Mark Foley. Now, as Time editor Ana Marie Cox reports on last night's Countdown, Romney's campaign not only removed from Romney's website the men's room cruising Senator's testimonial video, but archived press releases were re-written to redact all mention of Senator Craig.

So who's responsible for hiring a Bill Clinton/Mark Foley type, Mitt?

Will you also be auditing Hillary's archives for mentions of Mssrs. Paw and Hsu? (0.00 / 0)

Why don't you take care of that for us? (6.00 / 1)

Me? (6.00 / 1)
If she's involved with shady financing, let's vet all the information. Hooray for transparency!

Let me get this straight: Democrats protest war, Republicans protest health care?

[ Parent ]
PP doesn't the re-edit of old press releases irk/worry you? (5.00 / 1)
I've never heard of that before.  Maybe it's SOP, but if so, news to me.

[ Parent ]
It's MSOP... (0.00 / 0)
...that is to say, Moderately Standard...

If the press release says Fred holds a certain position and that is no longer the case, it should be changed, as press releases now serve as archives on campiagn web site; many are laundry lists of people I've never heard of, who serve on the Finance Team or the Telephone Team, etc.  A 'new' release is foolish, as they aren't 'news' anymore, so altering the old one makes MSOP sense.  BUT - IMHO - it SHOULD carry a notice that it was altered.

Yr. Obedient Servant, Peter Porcupine, Republican

[ Parent ]
No it doesn't... (5.80 / 5)
A press release has a date of the release, if someone has a certain title in 2000 and now has a different title in 2007 the old press release does not get edited.  A press release is just that a press release.  It's not standard operating procedure to falsify your archives.

Listening to Charlie Baker talk about fiscal responsibility is like getting lectured on abstinence from Paris Hilton - Tim Murray

[ Parent ]
Sorry Peter (6.00 / 1)
This was not the case for these press releases.  One was written by Sen. Craig and the others were listing endorsements for the Gov.  However, they did keep the original dates on the press releases with no mention that they were amended.

I guess this is what we have to look forward to if Myth becomes President.  When he wants to change something he removes all traces of it (What was that character called in Pulp Fiction who removed all traces of someone played by Harvey Kietel?)

Winston Wolfe or Wolf (0.00 / 0)
was the best at what Mitt needs, REWRITE!!

[ Parent ]
Winston Smith... (5.00 / 1)
...character in Orwell's prescient novel 1984 who was employed to re-write history for Big Brother.

I particularly like the line from Orwell's other prescient novel Animal Farm that goes something to the effect that all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.

[ Parent ]
By the way... (0.00 / 0)
...if you haven't seen it, rush to your nearest Blockbuster and rent the 1984 version of the 1984 movie.  It is positively chilling.

[ Parent ]
Is that the one starring (0.00 / 0)
Alberto Gonzales?

[ Parent ]
obligatory comment (6.00 / 2)
the book's better

[ Parent ]
The book is indeed richer... (6.00 / 1)
...books always are, but Richard Burton's (O'Brian) rhetoric at John Hurt (Smith) is not to be sneezed at.

[ Parent ]
As an aside... (0.00 / 0)
...it would be difficult to decide which was better.  Burton's rhetorical nuances in 1984 or Marlon Brando's at the end of Apocalypse Now

Lest the ladies here feel offended about my references to merely male actors, let me mention that Catherine Denieuve's rhetorical nuances in Indochine were remarkable.  One has to understand the allegory of the movie, though.

[ Parent ]
Burton's performance was far better. (0.00 / 0)
Gee - Did Denieuve make another movie after Belle de Jour?  I'll have to see that...

Yr. Obedient Servant, Peter Porcupine, Republican

[ Parent ]
Don't know re Denieuve... (0.00 / 0)
...go to Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com  They have everything there.

[ Parent ]
Know what? You BELONG in Germany! It was a JOKE (0.00 / 0)
Catherine has made DOZENS of movies since then, but for scary erotic beauty, it's one of the finest films ever made, even if it WAS in 1967!  Last Metro and Meyerling were pretty great, too...

BB - if there was no 'Rev. 08/07' at the bottom, then IMO that was wrong. (0.00 / 0)
Still, it makes no sense to say Fred is Chair in Prescott, MA when Fred died, but the rest of the Prescott team is in place.

In the olden days - and dear God, we're talking about only ten years ago - we always faxed press releases instead of mailing them, so reporters would have to only walk across the room instead of wait 3 days for the mail.  Then, we began to email them, so reporters wouldn't even have to walk across the room, and besides, you have a better chance of getting your quote in the paper as long as they only have to cut-and-paste.  The business of archiving press releases to form a campaign story line is even newer - maybe 3-4 years.

Before, press releases were rarely read, much less lovingly saved.  Now, they're on the Net in perpetuity.  Campaigns on which I have worked have used the 'Rev. On' method - but as we go forward, it will be interesting to see how this changes.

Obama and Hillary have had some changes and defections as well - how did they handle this?  This is a genuine uestion, as I don't get their releases like I do from the GOP candidates, and I'm not even certain they archive them on web sites.  STill - circumstances WILL change in ALL campaigns - what do YOU think is the 'right' way to handle it?

You shoulda told us that for you, "pragmatism" meant scratching out facts as they become inconvenient.

Myth Romney, Truth Relativist
E = MC2, where
E = expediency
C = convenience (usually a negative [termed an inconvenience], squared to spin into a positive value)
M = Myth, a randomly generated imaginary number named in honor of it's fabricator.

Orwellian! What a liar he is.

I don't know if it still exists, but... (0.00 / 0)
...there used to be a website called "Memory Hole."  If it still exists (check google) the press releases may be there.  Or on Google's cache.

It's ALL still on google cache (0.00 / 0)
search on:  "Larry Craig" site:mittromney.com click on the cache and the regular link to see it.

cache is a snapshot of a moving item (0.00 / 0)
and hence is dated a particular date... and a new snapshot will be taken sooner or later.

So -- want to archive it?  Screenshot, wget, do what you've got to do to keep that data.
