Facebook Obama Death Prayer

April 21, 2010 By historian

I would assume that Republicans will try to pass that off as a joke, but that’s not a good enough answer: since when has it been acceptable to pray for the death of the President of the United States?

And by the way, Democrats have never done anything remotely similar in living memory.

Lest anyone think this is a tempest in a teapot this little joke is now “liked” by 709,528 people.  With numbers like that it seems that substantial numbers of people who see themselves as rational and responsible find it ok to pray for President Obama’s death.

The comments include many enlightening comments:

William T. Pusey fuck yea i hate that nig

Sadie McLean lmao. this is amazing.

Karen Kelly McGill Oh my goodness; just saw this in someone’s status; and it made me laugh sooo hard!

Vicki Hunter this is so true lol

Amber Viggiano AGAIN… I joined this group a few hours ago & got a message from some vaginized pea brain tellin me I was an insensitive bitch…. what a douch!

Jennifer Alexis Archer hahaha it took me a minute to get this.. hahaha cause I was like uhhh no obama isn’t my favorite president.. lmao.. MOMMY BRAIN has taken me over!

Curtis Zilar AMEN! This made my day! haha

Russ Kline P.S…… lord please be swift..Thanks.

Linda Oldfather Awesome! I will pray hard every night…of course I was sorry to see the three go.

Angi Russ Frederick After the email Camille just sent me this is even funnier. Maybe this prayer should be said on the now outlawed “National Day of Prayer”

Dana Burns Great prayer:]

Chris Worden Whoever created this… i love you

Julie Bacani LOL. This is the greatest thing ever.

Nancy Kitchens Ellis Oh my!! So funny I had to use my inhaler. Love it

Amber Lynne Can’t say I’d shed one tear!…..

Alice Waterhouse I did not know this prayer was out there. Thanks to my daughter, I will now pray more often and this will be my focus.

It’s great to see such a great display of patriotism–also very heartening to see that many who cheer on such vile sentiments picture themselves with babies.

Please share widely!

    From CNN:

    <

    p>

CNN) — A New Jersey teachers union is coming under fire after an internal memo included a veiled threat to Gov. Chris Christie.

The leaked memo, which was sent to union leaders in the New Jersey Education Association’s Bergen County division, contains a closing paragraph written in the form of a prayer.

“Dear Lord,” the letter reads. “This year you have taken away my favorite actor, Patrick Swayze, my favorite actress, Farrah Fawcett, my favorite singer, Michael Jackson, and my favorite salesman, Billy Mays. I just wanted to let you know that Chris Christie is my favorite governor.”

that’s also messed up, and just in really bad taste.

      <

p>I mean, the thing is that public people sometimes do get assassinated. Encouraging that kind of thing is really not cool.

      <

p>(And what, would these people prefer President Biden?)

was on Morning Joe and this came up.  I definately found it disturbing.  what was also disturbing was to hear Gov. Christie say that he was laying off 750 teachers because the union wouldn’t agree to a one year salary freeze and a 1% of gross pay contribution to their health care.  Apparently they currently pay nothing at all and never have.

      <

p>Demonization is a bad thing wherever it occurs.  It is at least possible that the union is being unreasonable in the face of a 33% state budget deficit and that they have responded by demonizing the Governor and in one case praying for his death.

      <

p>There is obviously a big difference between an internal memo written by one person and a public campaign with 709,000 fans but it is also disturbingly ironic that an anti-Republican memo is being recycled as an anti-Obama Facebook page.

      <

p>So yes, it is important to call out the ignorant people who created this Facebook page and their fans but it should also remind us that whenever you add toxic language into the debate you are pouring gasoline on the fire of intolerance.

I was here for the full eight Goddamned years of the Bush incompetence, the false flag wars in unrelated countries, domestic spying, the loss of rights plus hundreds of other boneheaded ideas but.  I love it!

    <

p>You have no idea how painful it is to consider supporting the crowd who points to Austrailia and says we should bomb Iran next but Obama is not Marxist.  See I know the difference and the answer is neither left nor right.

    <

p>Obama is out and out globo-corp super hyper fascism on steriods.  There is zero concern for the continuation of America, the former spirit of America.  A sell out Manchurian Candidate of galactic proportions and perhaps the single key, that straw which broke the camel’s back and exposed the full sixty years of intellectual snot left propaganda.  That being said the compromised right, that specific church of pre-scripted dogma well both side can only offer law and social policy written by Satan’s highest minions.  Maybe I should join the Dark Side but it’s not my nature.

…I’m pretty sure He did not mean prayer for their deaths.  This reminds me of a quip from President Wilson.  When Wilson had a debilitating stroke a Senator with whom he had often been at odds came to visit and said, “We’re all praying for you, Mr. President.”  Wilson responded, “Which way, Senator?”

Luckily I am confident God would not listen or answer such a prayer.

      <

p>Reminds me of another President (Lincoln) when responding to a Senator who asked if God was on our side replied “My concern is not whether or not God is on our side but if we are on His for He is always Right”.

…Facebook says the page doesn’t even violate their content standards, which claim not to permit pornography, bullying, hate speech, and threats of violence.

p>Given that they have taken a stance in defense of Holocaust denial in the past, that shouldn’t surprise anyone.

p>But oh, we don’t allow hate speech! Against right wingers anyway. Against the legitimate duly elected president, and against them Jews, sure, but if you step out of line and call teabaggers total loonies…

        According to Dickipedia:

In 2006, Yahoo! executives offered to purchase Facebook for $1 billion. Zuckerberg, then in his early 20s, turned the offer down, instead selling a small portion of the company to Microsoft for a mere $240 million dollars, which suggests an overall company value of $15 billion. Many young people might, based on those reasons alone, label Zuckerberg a dick. Zuckerberg is actually a dick for several other, more legitimate reasons.

One of those reasons is that he handed out business cards reading: “I’m CEO…bitch.” (This is not made up. He actually did this.)

and yet, when I read it four years ago, I found Ben Metcalf’s Harper’s Swiftian essay, “On Simple Human Decency” to be among the funniest, most brilliant pieces of writing ever.

    <

    p>

I almost hesitate to ask the following question. I will ask it, though, out of what used to be called simple human decency:

Am I allowed to write that I would like to hunt down George W. Bush, the president of the United States, and kill him with my bare hands?

Let me be clear that I have no wish to perform such a deed in fact, nor do I want anyone else to destroy bodily what is, at least in the technical sense, a fellow human being. (Let me be equally clear that the above qualification, although true, is intended primarily as a legal ploy and should in no way be attributed to my claimed pacifism, which today’s prosecutor might find a way to use against me. I would also like excused from the proceedings my personal feelings for George W. Bush, embarrassment and rage, as they could probably be turned to my disadvantage as well.) In truth, I bring neither a message nor a promise of violence. I seek only to gauge what level of discourse is still acceptable in this country by asking, in the hope that I might someday participate in that discourse, whether I am free to posit that it would probably be great fun, and a boon to all mankind, if I were to slaughter the president of the United States with my bare hands.

    <

p>There is a difference.  The Harper’s article seems ultimately less dangerous than the Facebook page — but is this because of the likely audience more than it is the content?
